I would have never guessed that moving to Mexico would be an option for my retirement. Retirement in Mexico never even crossed my mind until a good friend of mine suggested that I take advantage of a Discovery Weekend event in Puerto Vallarta.
I was initially concerned that I would be trapped in a timeshare, high pressure sales event. My friend, who had been to many of these events in the past made it very clear that a Discovery Weekend is not about pressure to buy. The Discovery Weekend is about education on Real Estate in Mexico and in my case Real Estate in Puerto Vallarta.
Through the Puerto Vallarta Discovery Weekend, I was able to learn how to buy property in Mexico, get financing in Mexico and the actual day to day reality of life in Puerto Vallarta. I was also able to meet many other attendees who were in my exact situation. It felt great to chat with people that I could relate to when it came to my concerns about retirement in Mexico.
During my weekend in Puerto Vallarta, I was able to see that the area is very safe, very clean, very modern with a Home Depot, Sams Club, modern airport and modern roads and highways. Most the locals spoke English which was a huge help. I also found that there are already thousands of retirees in Puerto vallarta and many more on the way.
Lastly, I was absolutely blown away by the condos and homes in Puerto Vallarta that we were able to tour. The prices were very affordable and the properties very well built. I was extremely impressed and actually decided to buy a 2 bedroom condo in Puerto Vallarta in the Delcanto project.
Bottom line is that in spite of my worst fears, I found Puerto Vallarta to be very retirement friendly. It felt like home and soon it will be. For those who are the fence about retirement in Mexico, I recommend that you dip your foot in the Mexico retirement waters by attending a Discovery Weekend throughout Mexico.
Good luck to all!
George
